The Destination
Nestled at 765 m above sea level on the southern flank of the Hochschwab massif, Aflenz Kurort is one of Austria's most beautiful and storied mountain villages, with over 1,000 years of documented history.
The mighty Hochschwab massif, peaking at 2,277 m, forms an awe-inspiring backdrop. Hike to alpine lakes, spot chamois on the ridgelines, and discover the Bürgeralm by foot, bike or scenic toll road. Trails for every level surround the village.
Summer brings hiking, alpine swimming at Sackwiesensee, and cycling through meadows bursting with wildflowers. Come winter, the valley transforms: ski lifts, snowshoe tours, and tobogganing await. Autumn is golden and gloriously quiet.
First mentioned in 1025, Aflenz received its market town charter from Emperor Frederick III in 1458. The Gothic-Baroque Parish Church of St. Peter, the mother church of Mariazell, stands at the heart of the village. Monthly guided historic tours bring the past to life.
Aflenz's clean, cool mountain air is more than scenic: it's medically recognised. The Austrian government has certified the town as a heilklimatischer Kurort since 1979: a climatic health resort where the very air meets formal therapeutic standards.
Aflenz is small enough to feel like a true escape, yet well-equipped with local restaurants, Styrian Heuriger wine taverns, and a warm community. The town has attracted visitors in search of peace and nature since tourism began here in 1893.
Mariazell, Austria's greatest pilgrimage site, is a short drive away. The historic city of Graz, a UNESCO World Heritage treasure, is roughly 60 minutes by car. Aflenz makes the perfect base for day trips across Upper Styria.
Since 1979, the Austrian government has formally recognised Aflenz Kurort's climate as therapeutically beneficial, a designation earned through measurable air quality, altitude, and proven health-promoting conditions. In the Central European tradition, a stay in a Kurort is not merely a holiday. It is a genuine retreat for body and mind.
